Meet Aubrey Tuell

Aubrey Tuell is a strong conservative leader with the life experience to better our public education system in New Hanover County.

About Aubrey

As she recently went through the public education system and was raised by a mother who dedicated her entire career to the public school system, Aubrey learned early the importance of fighting for better public education to enhance the lives of every student. As a mentor and tutor, Aubrey has proven experience of increasing educational quality and success for all of our students.

  • Leadership

Aubrey has served in a variety of leadership roles, from founding the Turning Point USA Chapter at UNCW in her freshman year of college, presiding as the Chair of College Republicans at UNCW, serving as the Press Secretary of the North Carolina Federation of Young Republicans, and being elected Secretary of the New Hanover County Republican Party. She has also spent much time in the classroom with students. Aubrey has dedicated many years to helping our students succeed. Throughout her high school career, she served as a mentor, tutor, and assistant teacher. When attending college at UNCW, she tutored students at New Hanover County Schools, and since the launch of the program, she has served as a Reading Buddy at Wrightsboro Elementary.

  • Passion for Education

From a young age, public education has played a tremendous role in her life. As a recent graduate of the public school system and as an assistant teacher to students with a wide variety of demographic backgrounds, Aubrey understands the struggles our students are facing. These issues may not be found in policy, but they can surely be impacted by smart policy decisions. Through her experience as a peer mentor, Aubrey saw real change in the classroom and in the lives of the students and teachers. Because of her time spent helping students, grades increased, attendance went up, and behavioral issues decreased. Aubrey understands that when a distraction in the classroom occurs, it is not just the student involved that is affected, but an entire classroom of students and the teacher as well.

It is time to elect a new generation of leaders. It is time for new solutions to old problems. And it is time for a recent graduate of the public school system, with the skills and experience, to have a seat at the table. When elected, Aubrey will serve as a voice for students, parents, and the highly valued staff of New Hanover County Schools.

A Fresh Voice For
Students, Staff, and Parents

Academic Opportunity

Our children deserve the chance for excellence. Strengthening our non-general education programs is key to unlocking their fullest potential.

While most students succeed with the curriculum provided through general education, there are many who do not. These children require additional programs to reach their fullest potential.

During my public school career I participated in the Academically and Intellectually Gifted programs, honors, and AP classes. There are many students, like myself, who thrive in this environment. These programs give students the opportunity to advance their critical thinking and analysis skills in ways general education classes do not. We must bring critical thinking back into our general education classes. We also have students who may never plan on continuing their educational career after high school and instead wish to pursue a technical route.

We must ensure these students become successful through strong Career and Technical Education programs. All of our New Hanover County students deserve the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, no matter the pathway.

School Safety

Our students and staff deserve to be safe at school. There are fiscally responsible solutions to decrease violent behavior and educational disruptions.

We must engage our large retired population. They are passionate about the future and want to help our students succeed.

We should be gathering members of the community to monitor hallways and highly trafficked areas during class changes to decrease attempts at starting violence. When there are adult figures present, violent conflict is less likely to occur.

We also must ensure we are adequately staffing our schools with School Resource Officers. During my time in public school, my high school was staffed with at least one full-time SRO. We had many other officers visit the school during peak hours, such as lunch and dismissal. When elected, I will advocate for and implement proven solutions to provide a safe environment for our students to learn.

Accountability

Our children deserve to be held accountable. As a school system, we must ensure our students graduate with the readiness to be an engaged citizen.

Through a variety of avenues we must hold our children accountable.

Student-to-student mentoring is extremely effective in increasing attendance, increasing grades, and decreasing disruptive behavior. I served as a mentor and tutor while in high school and college to dozens of children. Most recently, I have served as a reading buddy for our first grade classes at Wrightsboro Elementary.

Through these experiences I was able to see first hand how much of a difference can be made in the lives of our students from just volunteering. The reading buddies program implemented this year at NHCS is a great start, however, we must remember that peer mentorship develops skills for both parties far better than traditional mentorship. Through my own mentoring experience I developed further knowledge of how to keep students engaged, as well as, ways to increase their want to learn and even attend school everyday.
